The Life You Save May Be Your Own

I believe that the theme in this book was Alienation, because Mr. Shiftlet was an outsider, and he did things on his own. He traveled around the country to earn money to get by, and he thought more of himself, but also did things differently because he only had one arm. At the end of the book, he met a boy that was hitchhiking and asked him why he left, and Mr. Shiftlet said that his mother was mean to him. He told him the story about when he left his mother and said that he should have never left. The boy got mad at him and he told him to pullover, and he swore at him, saying that he was stupid. This is a good example of Alienation.
